Attacks on the rise in Male’...

The past few weeks have seen a spate of violent attacks and illegal activities in the capital, Male’. Analysts expect these attacks, believed to have been orchestrated by the militant wing of the MDP, to increase as the week progresses.

After the arson attack on the resident of the Chief Justice Sh. Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim and the bungled attack on Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, the MDP’s militant wing led by the infamous Amin Faisal are believed to have been mobilizing both in Male’ and in some southern islands to instill fear into the hearts of the residents of Male’ and to send a clear message to senior Government officials that their lives, loved ones and property were not safe from attack.

Amin and his gang are believed to have been amassing partey’s and signing up people for covert attacks on key persons and targets during the week. These attacks are expected as early as 7th November.

We have also learnt that the tyres of Foreign Minister Dr. Shaheed’s motorcycle were slashed two nights running, and that a vegetable farm operated in Laamu Atoll by his brother-in-law was destroyed a few nights back. Nearly 3000 papayas were reportedly slashed by box cutters in the incident. Death threats have also been received by senior Government officials, DRP members and Parliamentarians.
