Challenger wins in Maldives poll Opposition leader Mohamed Nasheed has won a run-off election to become the new president of the Maldives, say official preliminary results. Mr Nasheed's victory follows the country's first democratic presidential elections. He will replace Asia's longest-serving leader, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. President Gayoom won the first round earlier this month, but failed to secure the 50% needed for outright victory over Mr Nasheed.
