Government and UNDP Sign a Project “Technical Assistance to the Preparation of an Action

Male’, July 08, 2009: Affordable and quality health care for all, affordable housing and living costs, prevention of narcotics abuse and trafficking, and improving transportation between islands, are some of the key pledges made in the MDP-alliance Manifesto. The Manifesto has been declared by the President as the framework of the country’s national development plan up to 2013. In support of the country’s development priorities, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Finance and Treasury recently signed a project which will pave the way towards realizing the pledges made in the Manifesto.

The signing of the project, titled ‘’Technical Assistance to the Preparation of an Action Plan for the Government Manifesto” under the UNDP Country Programme Action Plan 2008-2010, will provide key strategic direction and support to the Department of National Planning within the Ministry. The action plan, to be completed by September 2009, will ensure human right principles are applied throughout its implementation and that it is closely aligned with the government’s commitment to fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

“This project highlights the close cooperation and strong commitment between the Government of Maldives and the UN system in addressing national priorities,” said Mr. Patrice Coeur-Bizot, UNDP Resident Representative.

According to the Minister of Finance and Treasury, Hon. Mr. Ali Hashim an MDG-based action plan will assist the government to fulfill its commitment to the Millennium Declaration. Other UN agencies such as UNFPA and UNICEF will also provide technical assistance in completing this new project. The action plan will serve as the basis for development programming and policy consolidation for the country for the period 2008-2013.
